Dr. Naoko Ellis

Naoko Ellis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She holds a Ph.D. (2003) in Chemical Engineering from UBC; M.E.Sc. (1993) in Chemical Engineering from the Western University; and a B.Sc. in Chemistry (Honours) in 1991 from the University of Waterloo. She is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC; and the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering.

Her expertise lies in the area of multiphase reaction engineering with emphasis on fluidized beds. Some current projects include: biomass gasification and pyrolysis; chemical looping combustion; pyrolysis product utilization including bio-oil and biochar applications; and biofuels. She is passionate about engaging others on sustainability related issues, and developing ways to advance environmental literacy. She is an active member of the department’s sustainability club, and enjoys being outdoors, cycling to work, and taking care of the worm boxes at home.
